Bernardsville Public Library in partnership with the Bernardsville Green Team will host a free screening of “The Biggest Little Farm” on Tuesday, September 24 at 7:00 pm. This documentary chronicles the eight-year quest of John and Molly Chester as they trade city living for 200 acres of barren farmland and a dream to harvest in harmony with nature. Through dogged perseverance and embracing the opportunity provided by nature’s conflicts, the Chesters unlock and uncover a biodiverse design for living that exists far beyond their farm and its seasons. The movie was directed and narrated by John Chester, a longtime documentary cinematographer. His wife Molly was a chef and blogger before they moved to the farm.
Before the movie, Malcolm Salovaara of PK’s Four Brothers Farm in Bernardsville will talk briefly about his farm, a multi-species diversified livestock operation dedicated to healing its pastures through regenerative, synergistic grazing practices.
The Chesters’ farm is a traditional foods farm located 40 miles north of Los Angeles. It is dedicated to the mission of creating a well-balanced eco-system and rich soils that produce nutrient-dense foods while treating the environment and the animals with respect. New York Times reviewer Glenn Kenny wrote of the film, “If you’ve entertained “Green Acres”-inspired reveries on the joys of “farm living,” this documentary may rid you of them in short order. But it may also revive your wonder at the weird but ultimately awe-inspiring ways in which humans can help nature do its work.”
This is a free program; advance registration is requested at, or call the library at 908-766-0118 to sign up. The library is located at 1 Anderson Hill Road in Bernardsville.
